Doctor Who 5x13: The Big Bang
And thusly, the newest series ends the way it began: the TARDIS in Amy Pond’s backyard. But goddamn, the road inbetween was amazing.
I admit, the end of the last episode was pretty dark, dark enough that I wasn’t sure there was any way that Steven Moffat would be able to satisfactorily write his way out of it. The Doctor trapped in the Pandorica, Amy Pond shot and dead, Rory an...

Doctor Who 5x12: The Pandorica Opens
The word “epic” gets thrown around a lot these days. By me. All the time. But this episode is, in every sense of the word, fucking EPIC.
I don’t think I can say anything else about it yet. The wait for the final episode is going to be interminable.

My Year In Movies #69: The Losers
This movie was a light-weight action film. No more, no less. It passes through your mind light so much cotton candy. In more capable hands than Sylvain White’s, it might’ve been something more. But then again, the source material, by Andy Diggle and Jock was a light-weight action film in comic form (by design), so maybe not.
In any event, Chris Evans steals the movie.

My Year In Movies #68: Memento
“We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are.”
You’ve heard of this movie. It’s the one that goes backwards, made by the dude who did The Dark Knight. Except that’s not strictly true. Yes, it begins at the end of the story, and ends at the beginning, but interspersed throughout it are scenes that actually play in the correct chronological order, until the...

My Year In Movies #67: Beetlejuice
Hey, remember when Tim Burton did amazing and original work that was not boring and predictable? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Seriously though, this movie holds up fantastically well, anchored by a great performance from Michael Keaton as the titular bio-exorcist, and oh, hey, look, it’s Alec Baldwin before he was Alec Baldwin. The effects still look pretty great, all done practically or...

Doctor Who 5x11: The Lodger
This episode was HILARIOUS. Matt Smith’s eccentricities and quirks as the Doctor were on full display, and James Corden really played the part of straight man perfectly. The Doctor really is shown in almost every episode to be a guy who is good at almost everything, if not the best. So OF COURSE he’d be annoying and inexplicable to any sort of normal,...

My Year In Movies #66: Watchmen (Ultimate Cut)
Let’s get this out of the way right now: I loved this movie when it was first released. It’s one of my favorite graphic novel/comic stories, and I’d been heavily anticipating it since the first trailer was put out with The Dark Knight. I saw 3 times in the theatre, and for an almost 3 hour long movie, that’s quite a bit of time put in. I’ve backed off my initial...

Currents, chapter 1
So there we were, me and Jon, in the back of this shit-kicker’s pick up truck, heading down this back road in the clear summer evening, when it hit this weird clump of something in the road and the truck flipped and Jon ended up landing ass-first in some bushes and I ended up head-first through a tree, my memories and hopes and fears spread on the forest floor. The driver (Brand) and his...

Doctor Who 5x10: Vincent and the Doctor
This was a quieter episode, almost more personal. The message behind it was one I definitely appreciated. The Doctor’s speech to Amy Pond, about life’s ups and downs, is one I wish I could’ve given to someone about a year ago. But anyway…
It was different from the other “Doctor meets great historical figure” episodes, as where Shakespeare and Dickens both...

My favorite Shakespeare play? Macbeth. My current director obsession? Akira Kurosawa. Most badass actor ever? Toshiro Mifune. Hence: AWESOME GODDAMN FILM.
