My Year In Movies #48: It Might Get Loud
As a guitar player and musician, this was a fascinating look into the heads and the playing styles of three legendary guitar players. (Well, two legendary ones, and one coming up on legendary.) Their styles all diverge greatly, but all meet at one point, in an appreciation of the blues and the classic song structures embedded in rock and roll.
If there’s one thing I definitely learned...

The Doctor: There's one thing you never put in a trap if you're smart. If you value your continued existence. If you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there's one thing you never ever put in a trap.
Angel Bob: What would that be, sir?
The Doctor: Me.

My Year In Movies #47: X2: X-Men United
This movie holds up REALLY well still. The first movie suffers a little bit, since it had to do a lot of set-up and intro, but this one just explodes right out of the gate, with an opening sequence that still blows me away in terms of pacing, choreography, and effects work. The Nightcrawler/White House sequence is just about perfect. And the rest of the movie doesn’t fail to live up to it...

My Year In Movies #46: We Are Wizards
A documentary about Harry Potter fandom and some various sub-cultures within it, this film was cute, especially the sections about the Wizard Rock bands. I really liked the kid who made up the entirety of the Hungarian Horntails.
That said, there was some batshit crazy people in it too. It was fun though. I kind of want to start a WizRock band now. Or rather, the Doctor Who equivalent of same.

Doctor Who 5x04: Time of the Angels
Wow.
Ok, this was the best episode of the new season yet. The opening with River Song was fantastic. The Doctor and Amy running around a museum, him pointing out everything that’s wrong, was fantastic. The interplay between River and the Doctor was fantastic. EVERYTHING once they got to the Maze of the Dead was fantastic. And that cliffhanger… wow.
I really like the...

My Year In Movies #45: The Incredible Hulk
In preparation for the release of Iron Man 2, I intended on watching the first film and this one. Unfortunately, Netflix disagreed and only sent me the latter. Anyway…
I liked it. It was a fun little action flick. The beginning especially, which was more of a chase/Bourne-style film than the rest. I had to continually remind myself that this was the same director who just did Clash of the...

Doctor Who 5x03: Victory Of The Daleks
Again, the new Doctor continues to impress. Mark Gatiss’s script seemed to be more old school than either of Moffat’s first two efforts, as you can see where the scenes would have been extended if it were split into 4 parts, with Tom Baker or Peter Davison in the role of the Doctor. As it stands, it featured the Daleks, who I am STILL entirely enthralled with. And for the second week...

My Year In Movies #44: Metropolis (2001)
Very loosely based on both the original silent movie, and the Tezuka manga adaptation of it, this film had some amazing visuals, both hand-drawn and CG, while keeping with Tezuka’s drawing style. Especially great in the film was the use of music: it was mostly big band and jazz pieces, very at odds with the images onscreen, but still compatible with the tone set by the film. Check it out,...

It’s hard to escape grief and loss when reminders persist, especially now. Profiles remain, comments, blog entries, youtube videos, pictures on Facebook; all these things are there still, electronic ghosts of the person I used to know and love. And every so often, a ghost surfaces when I don’t expect it, and throws off my whole sense of navigation, lost and floating in the middle of...

My Year In Movies #43: The Aviator
I don’t know why it took me so long to see this film, but I’m glad I finally did. I’ve long known that Martin Scorcese is a genius. His filmography bears this out. And this film is no exception. He nails the story of Howard Hughes, one that is essentially American at its core. The story of a man who rose and fell by his own mind, through his own self.
Interestingly enough,...

Doctor Who 5x02: The Beast Below
Another episode which showcases what Moffat does VERY well, “The Beast Below” cemented my opinion of Matt Smith’s version of The Doctor, and upped the ante in terms of Amy Pond. He continues to tread a different path than Tennant, and showed that, while he likes humanity, he doesn’t have the wide-eyed “aren’t humans wonderful?” outlook of Tennant’s...

Goddamn, this movie. I liked it just as much the second time, maybe even more so. I could take the time and see the nuance in performance, and the background details. The sound design, especially, is fantastic in this film.
Seriously, still no spoilers, but it is probably my favorite movie released this year so far.
