My Year In Movies #38: Planet Hulk
This is the first Marvel animated feature I’ve seen. I’m well-versed in the DC animated universe, but for some reason, the Marvel stuff hasn’t appealed to me much. And, to be honest, this film does not change my mind very much.
The story, of Hulk as Maximus essentially, was not super-complex, but it was fine for what it was trying to be. The animation style put me off a bit...

My Year In Movies #37: Green Lantern: First Flight
Like the other DC Universe animated films, this was pretty decent. The voice casting was great, and the animation was slightly more anime influenced than the others (is it me, or was there a definite Aeon Flux vibe from some of the anatomy?) I appreciated that they got the “origin” story out of the way quickly, in the pre-title sequence. And Sinestro was PERFECT.
All that said, I...

Oscar Picks 2010
SO, my Oscar picks for this year. I’m including what will win, and what I think SHOULD win in each category, if I so choose.
Leading Actor: Jeff Bridges
Leading Actress: Sandra Bullock (will), Carey Mulligan (should)
Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz
Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique
Animated Feature: Up (though Fantastic Mr. Fox could upset)
Art Direction: Avatar
Cinematography:...

My Year In Movies #36: In The Loop (Oscar Week...
In The Loop was one of my favorite movies of last year, definitely the funniest, and DEFINITELY the most quotable. I’ve watched it… god, I don’t even know how many times, and it still makes me laugh my ass off. The entire cast is brilliant, the writing is smart and funny, and the fact that it is entirely plausible that this happens (or happened, if you want to apply it to our...

My Year In Movies #35: Hamlet (1948)
“This is the tragedy of a man who could not make up his mind.”
That one line in the introductory narration for Laurence Olivier’s filmed version of Hamlet threw me so much that I could not really enjoy the film as much as I otherwise would have. I understand that Olivier (who directed as well as starred in the film) had to make cuts in order to fit the film in its allotted...

My Year In Movies #34: District 9 (Oscar Week part...
I’ve cooled a bit on this film since I first saw it in theatres (when I called it one of the best movies of the last decade [hyperbole much?]), but I still think it’s one of the more original sci-fi films to be released in the recent past, and the effects work is ASTOUNDING for how low the budget was, comparatively. The “Prawns” look like practical effects; the fact that...

My Year In Movies #33: Hellboy: Sword of Storms
Like the other Hellboy animated feature, Blood & Iron, this had great animation, excellent voice acting, and an interesting plot based on actual myths. In this case, Japanese folk lore.
What this has that the other one did not is more character development. More time is spent on Abe & Liz’s working relationship, as well as some of the other BPRD members.
All in all, good stuff....

My Year In Movies #32: Alice In Wonderland 3D
Congratulations, Tim Burton, you’ve made a bigger disappointment than Planet of the Apes.
Seriously though, I did not entirely hate this movie. I thought the beginning, pre-Wonderland segment was okay, and set up the Alice character arc well. I liked Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat, because Stephen Fry is fucking awesome. And I liked the girl who played Alice, Mia Wasikowska. She did a...

My Year In Movies #31: A Serious Man (Oscar Week...
I’ve reviewed this before, and my opinion on it hasn’t changed: it is still one of the Coen Brothers’ best films, and definitely one of the best of 2009.
I keep coming back to the scene of Larry Gopnik and Clive. You never see Clive leave the envelope on the desk, so the “fact” of him leaving a bribe is never entirely certain. He and his father certainly act like...

My Year In Movies #30: Inglourious Basterds (Oscar...
A movie about movies, a action film that skips past a lot of the action, an “America is awsome!” film that’s mostly in French and German… Inglourious Basterds is all of these things. It’s also one of the best films of last year, my pick for Best Picture of the year, and quite possibly Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece. And he damn well knows it. (You think that...

My Year In Movies #29: Justice League: Crisis On...
While this is hardly at all like the JLA: Earth-2 graphic novel upon which it is supposedly based, it’s still a fun story, utilizing DC’s distinct universal architecture. There are many easter eggs for people who know the comics to look for as well.
My only issue is the voice acting. Some of it is fine. James Woods as Owlman is awesome, actually. But whomever is playing Batman and...

My Year In Movies #28: Beer Wars
An expose of the beer industry, especially the microbrews and “craft beers”, Beer Wars is told from an insider’s perspective, and that really helps it make its case. The Big 3 in the industry (Coors, Anheuser-Busch, and Miller) have a huge amount of the market share, but lag far behind in product quality. The industry isn’t growing as a whole, but is instead fracturing...
I feel this is probably all too accurate.
